SOCIAL DIALOGUE IN EAST AFRICA MINUTES OF 3rd REGIONAL FORUM MEETING

INTRODUCTION

With a view to re-confirm collaboration between employer´s organizations and trade union centers across the EAC region, adopting the draft joint position paper on removing barriers for free movement of workers in EAC (as endorsed by national partners country by country) and taking stake of recent political developments in EAC integration process / CMP-implementation progress a 3rd Regional Forum meeting was held on 30th September 2014 in Arusha-Tanzania.

The forum provided an opportunity to share experiences and lessons learned from the pilot project so far, including the running of national activities and discuss (draft) a joint strategy / action plan for lobby and advocacy activities (re. free movement of workers) at national and regional levels and/or for sensitization of constituencies at national level.

Additionally, the forum served as a platform to discuss a draft outline for the continuation / extension of project on social dialogue in East Africa beyond the pilot project phase. Finally, the forum also served as an opportunity to officially introduce the new chairperson of EAEO Rosemary N Ssenabulya (FUE) and bid farewell to the outgoing former chairperson Jacqueline Mugo (FKE) who has been promoted to the Secretary General of Africa Business (Africa’s Employers body, formerly the Pan-African Employers Confederation (PEC)).

The Forum was attended by Secretary Generals, Executive Secretaries, Chairpersons and project coordinators from the 12 partner organisations participated, namely; COSYBU & AEB (Burundi), COTU & FKE (Kenya), CESTRAR & PSF (Rwanda) TUCTA & ATE (Tanzania), NOTU & FUE (Uganda) and ZATUC & ZANEMA (Zanzibar) and top officials from EAC regional Trade Unions and Employers Organizations apex bodies EATUC and EAEO respectively, delegate from the East African Business Council (EABC) as well as representatives of ILO Geneva and Dar es Salam office, the Federation of Danish Industries (DI) and those from the LO/FTF Council.
