EATUC and EAEO with support from Solidarity Centre have organized a workshop on reviewing progress of the draft Social Security Portability Bill for the EAC which took place from 23rd to 24th March 2018 in Arusha Tanzania
The meeting brought together more than 30 participants from East African Civil Society Forum(EACSOF), East Africa Local Government Association(EALGA), East African Health Platform(EAHP),GIZ IIDEA programme and representatives from East African Legislative Assembly (EALA)
During the sessions, social partners had opportunity to discuss on how to improve the draft bill and how the social partners can push this agenda in EAC.
The draft bill presented for the first time in May 2015 to the members of East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) through the Committee of the General Purpose at the East African Community Headquarters in Arusha Tanzania
The Bill obligates Partner States to enact national social security laws that secure social rights of its citizens and those of the Community.
It also seeks to ensure that social security benefits are portable, and that contributors to old-age pension schemes and other schemes do not experience any disadvantage associated with these contributions when moving from one Partner State to the other whether in public or private employment.
