EATUC/TUCTA Meeting with UN Resident Coordinator, 17th January 2024

Dar es Salaam Tanzania

A delegation from the East African Trade Union Confederation (EATUC) and the Tanzania Union of Construction and Allied Workers (TUCTA), led by EATUC Chairman and TUCTA Secretary General, Comrade Hery Mkunda, held extensive deliberations with the UN Resident Coordinator for Tanzania, Mr. Zlatan Milisic, on 17th January 2024. The meeting took place at the United Nations offices in Dar es Salaam and marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the trade union movement and the United Nations in Tanzania.

The discussions primarily focused on trade union engagement in the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) process, as well as exploring other potential areas of collaboration. The UNSDCF serves as the strategic framework for the UN’s development activities in Tanzania, aligning with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Comrade Mkunda emphasized the critical role of trade unions in advancing sustainable development, particularly in areas such as decent work, social protection, gender equality, and climate action.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various UN agencies, including UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women, and the ILO, who shared insights on how trade unions can actively contribute to the implementation of the UNSDCF. The discussions highlighted the importance of inclusive partnerships, ensuring that workers’ voices are heard and their interests are represented in national and international development agendas.

Key areas of collaboration identified during the meeting included capacity building for trade unionspromoting social dialogue, and advocating for policies that support decent work and equitable economic growth. The participants also explored opportunities for joint initiatives aimed at addressing challenges such as youth unemployment, gender inequality, and the impacts of climate change on workers.

The engagement underscored the shared commitment of EATUC, TUCTA, and the UN to fostering a collaborative approach to sustainable development. By leveraging the strengths and expertise of both the trade union movement and the UN system, the meeting laid the groundwork for meaningful partnerships that will benefit workers and communities across Tanzania.

The delegation expressed gratitude to Mr. Zlatan Milisic and the UN team for their openness to collaboration and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to achieve the shared goals of social justice, inclusive development, and sustainable progress.
