The 10th Annual EATUC Summit under the auspice of the theme: “Strengthen Trade Unionism for the Better EAC” took place at Silver Spring Hotel in Nairobi Kenya from 30th to 31st August 2016. An exciting first day of the 10th Annual EATUC Summit started off with a African Regional Conference on Regional Integration and the Role of Trade unions

The well attended summit attracted several participants from the five member countries of East Africa, as well as partners and dignitaries who are authorities in Labour Issues. In his address to the Summit the COTU-K Secretary General who is also the former  EATUC Chairman stressed on the need for Member states of EAC need to be more honest and transparent in their dealing to nurture cohesiveness and to subdue mutual suspicion that have seen some member states seem to be lukewarm towards the integration process.

Bro. Atwoli highlighted the fact that EATUC was very vigilant to ensure the smooth harmonization implementation of the signed Common Market Protocol that took place in 2010 to guarantees free movement of labour across East Africa Countries. He stressed that EATUC will always advocate and campaign for workers to enjoy the full benefits that come with this Protocol. He vowed to that EATUC will not rest until the Common Market Protocol is achieved and policy documents and recommendations are well developed.

During the 10th Annual EATUC Summit, Bro. Eric Manzi from CESTRAR Rwanda was elected as a new EATUC Chairman

The 10th Annual EATUC Summit brought together more than 60 participants from China, Denmark, Germany, Lesotho, Togo, Sudan, Zambia, Belgium, Switzerland, and Nigeria, cooperating partners from LOFTF, ILO, FES,FNV, Solidarity Centre and other regional and sub-regional organizations ITUC-Africa, SATUCC, OATUU and OTUWA.   The chief guests invited included; Bro. Hon. Fackson Shamenda the immediate former Zambian Labour Minister – Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Bro. Wellington Chibebe – Deputy General Secretary of ITUC Brussels, Bro. Kwasi Adu-Amankwa the General Secretary ITUC-Africa, Bro. Alex Bonney the Vice President of OATUU


Research Methodology

The East African Trade Union Confederation (EATUC) and the East African Employers Organization (EAEO) with support  from FNV-Mondiaal under the new EATUC/EAEO/FNV Programme organized three day Research Methodology Workshop for Researchers  from 29th June to 1st July 2016in Arusha, Tanzania.

This Workshop brought together researchers from EATUC affiliates (COTU-Kenya, COSYBU-Burundi; CESTRAR-Rwanda, NOTU- Uganda, ZATUC- Zanzibar, and TUCTA- Tanzania Mainland) and EAEO national organizations (FKE-Kenya, PSF-Rwanda, AEB-Burundi, FUE-Uganda, ZANEMA- Zanzibar and ATE-Tanzania Mainland). The Workshop was facilitated by Dr. Trywell Kalusopa Senior Researcher from the African Labour Research Network.

The Workshop focused on the Joint Study to be carried out by EATUC and EAEO on Annex II of the Common Market Protocol focusing on free movement of workers. This team of researchers will conduct a research and compile country specific reports on the schedules for free movement of persons within East Africa Community.

The Programme will go a long way in building research capacity of the employers and workers organizations in East Africa to engage in policy discussions based on information gathered through the research findings, facts and figures.
